About

What Open Heart is.

The Open Heart Initiative is a student-founded organization bringing free heart health screenings, education, and care navigation to underserved communities in Richmond, VA.

High blood pressure is called "the silent killer": it has no symptoms, and many people are living with it without knowing. We meet people where they already are, in barbershops, churches, and community spaces, check their numbers for free, and help connect anyone at risk to affordable care.

How it works

Three steps. That’s the whole thing.

01

Answer honestly

Thirteen simple questions about you, your history, and your habits. No medical words, no trick questions, no judgment.

02

See your results

A score from 0 to 25, explained in plain words: what it means and which factors are driving it.

03

Take one next step

Free and sliding-scale clinics near your ZIP, telehealth options, and exactly what to ask for when you get there.

Who this is for

Made for the people medicine overlooks.

If any of these sound like you, Open Heart was built with you in mind.

No insurance needed. No cost. No judgment.

  • Richmond residents in underserved neighborhoods without easy access to a doctor
  • Anyone who hasn't had their blood pressure checked in over a year
  • People who are uninsured or worried about the cost of care
  • Families who want to understand and protect their heart health

What we do

The four pillars.

Prevention

Free blood pressure screenings at trusted community spots, same place every month. Home blood pressure cuffs loaned to those who need to track their numbers.

Education

Plain-language heart health teaching: what your numbers mean, heart-healthy eating on a real budget, and how to spot the signs of a stroke (F.A.S.T.). Available in English and Spanish.

Access

We don't just hand you a referral. We help you book the appointment, find affordable medication, and get to the clinic. Real help, all the way to care.

Recovery

Support after a heart event: understanding your medications, warning signs to watch for, and getting connected to cardiac rehab. Plus free re-checks so your progress is tracked over time.

Know your numbers

Your blood pressure has two numbers, like 120/80.

Most people with high blood pressure feel completely fine. The only way to know is to check.

Under 120/80 Healthy. Keep it up.
120–139 / 80–89 Elevated. Time to pay attention.
140+ / 90+ High. Talk to a doctor.
180/120 or higher Dangerous. Seek care today.

Five minutes.
For the people who need you around.
